Are you curious about the value of your pre-owned watch?
If you are considering selling your watch, one of the first questions is often what it is worth.
However, it is rarely possible to assess a pre-owned watch based on brand and model alone. Two watches that appear identical at first glance may have different values when examined more closely.
At Stæhr Preowned, our valuations are based on many years of experience and in-depth knowledge of the pre-owned watch market. We always start with the specific watch, where factors such as model, reference, year, condition, originality, documentation, and current demand can affect the price.
What role do brand, model, and reference play?
Brand and model are a natural place to start, but the exact reference is just as important.
It indicates which version of the model it is, and the reference can help identify the production period, materials, and specific details of the watch, among other things.
This also means that two watches from the same model series do not necessarily have the same value. Different references may be more or less sought after on the market, and certain years and variants may stand out.
A Rolex Submariner is a good example. Two Submariner watches may look alike at first glance, but differences in reference, year, condition, and accessories can affect the final valuation.
What role do condition and originality play?
When a pre-owned watch is assessed, its condition is also examined more closely. Normal signs of wear are expected on a watch that has been worn, but the extent of wear can affect its value.
Originality is also important. The dial, hands, bezel, bracelet, and other parts can affect the valuation, especially for older and more collector-oriented watches. Therefore, it is not necessarily an advantage for an older watch to appear brand new.
The box, certificate, service papers, and other original accessories can also play a role. A complete set is inherently more attractive to the next owner, but the absence of a box or papers does not mean that the watch cannot be sold or has lost its value.
The market helps determine the price
The value of a pre-owned watch is not static. Demand for certain brands, models, and references changes, and this can affect the price for which the watch can be sold.
Therefore, the price you previously paid for the watch is not necessarily the same as its current market value. A valuation should be based on both the watch itself and the market in which it is to be sold today.
